The original lacquer finish on your cabinets is delicate and fragile, it’s the ‘Achilles Heel’ of your Kitchen!
Lacquer Finishes (by far the weakest link) are sub-standard finishes used by competitive Cabinet Makers because of low labor, fast, cheap and fast drying! The average lacquer finished life in the Sierra Nevada climate is 10 to 20 years! Sometimes 25 years.
But Cabinetry life is usually 60 years +. Question: Why throw out good cabinets that can be Refurbished / Refinished / 100% Recycled?
If you stripped and sanded down your cabinets to bare wood, completely Refinished as in past years, it would cost more than New Cabinet Replacement in this high labor era!
Also, the sanding process would flatten the millwork edges/corners and details (damaging wood) and EPA emptied the shelves of Finish strippers’ that once worked! Absolutely Not recommended. And it will look cheap!

Cabinet Damage that’s often Misunderstood

1. Direct Sun Damage; is the worst! It’s dual damage, direct heat rays that burns and bleaches and UV rays that are very different: bleaches the stain color, both yellows lacquer decomposing the wood’s finish.

UV Ultra Violent Ray Damage; the most misunderstood is UV Rays! The difference from sun rays, UV rays bounces (different wavelength) much deeper into homes thru New E Glass! 25’ to 50’ feet(!) throughout your interior, killing colors! The wood requires retinting in UV damaged areas! But first we require an inspection, sometimes the damage is extreme! Please don’t delay your inspection! Northern Sierra Nevada has the very highest UV ratings in all the U.S.!

Note: Extreme UV is one of many reasons we require a sample door from your cabinetry!

2. Extreme Humidity Changes: Northern Sierra Nevada region holds additional U.S. Climate Records; not only the driest humidity in the US, but also, the driest co-efficient ratio to high humidity ratio in the U.S.! This translates into the largest change in the wood’s humidity causing annual extreme expansion and contraction! This causes old brittle lacquer finishes to flake off, grey and dulling the sheen, basic failure! It’s really a shame that inferior lacquer finishes shorten your cabinets normal long-life span! Your Cabinets should last twice as long!

In May 2000, I wrote and photographed an article in El Décor Magazine called “Kitchens Aren’t Just Kitchens Anymore.” My writings centered on how complex Kitchens have become the center of the home with the modern open floor plans! My life’s trade experiences have what allowed me to develop the products and processes that I call ‘Cabinet Guard’ System. There is absolutely nothing else on the market! It’s been said need is the mother of invention. We needed a better way to Refresh / Refurbish / Refinish your high cost investments professionally!

Some Confusing Anomalies

Many of my clients had already upgraded to expensive Granite-Tops! Note: Granite absolutely will break if removed for cabinet replacement! Also, if you replace cabinets, you almost always are required to replace your flooring as the new Cabinet footprint will not match the existing footprint! This anomaly is very common! Our Refinishing is the answer!

Yes, there is the Re-Facing industry that replaces the faces/doors/drawer fronts for the same high cost of new Cabinets, but their detailing of Re-Facing is usually something less than desired fit and finish quality.

Spraying lacquer in kitchens is a big mess (and not EPA approved). Lacquer spraying is now illegal, both a high Fire Hazard and Non-V.O.C.’s Compliant when sprayed inside Residences! Paint brushing - that’s worse! The final appearance is sub-standard (sloppy). At best, down grading your investment! Paint doesn’t last and you move out of your Kitchen, just like a remodel.

Our Approach To A Successful Refinishing Project

We accept new projects only after we completely refinish your sample door from your kitchen! We don’t use small factory samples! They’re inappropriate, we use a realistic approach!

Cabinetry Inspection Fee $100.00 -$200.00 depending on distance

Basic Custom Sample Door Fee $300.00 min. Add-ons if Premium Glazing requested.

If the Client goes forward at inspection appointment, with Sample Door Fee $300.00. The Inspection Fee will be waived. If client goes forward with written quotation within 90 days, Sample Door Fee will be deducted from Quotation. At Inspection a budget will be guesstimated after Sample Door returned and approval by owners, a written quotation will be provided. Our estimates are usually 15% to 25% of new cabinet replacement cost, depending on wood species, project location and complexity of Refinish.
